Dmitri Dozortsev, MD, PhD

One of the most impactful innovators in assisted human reproduction

Over 30 years, Dr. Dmitri Dozortsev has contributed many discoveries and inventions to human reproductive embryology, physiology, and endocrinology.

Dr Dozortsev’s project for genetic analysis of a sperm cell before fertilization was profiled in Nature

Dr’s Dozortsev most recent co-discovery changed the central paradigm of reproductive physiology postulating that ovulation is triggered by LH-independent rise of progesterone and not by estradiol as was believed for the last 75 years. A derivative from that work became a new, revolutionary approach to improve human egg quality – Term Maturation and Term Stimulation

Education and training background

While attending Pavlov Medical School in his home city of St.Petersburg, Dr. Dozortsev developed a strong interest in embryonic cell differentiation. After graduating as a physician-surgeon (MD) in 1988, without practicing medicine for a single day, he joined the Department of Mammalian Embryology at the  Institute of Experimental Medicine as a research fellow. In 1991 Dr. Dozortsev came to the United States and continued his training in experimental embryology at the Reproductive Genetics Institute (RGI) in Chicago, headed by a preimplantation genetics pioneer Dr. Verlinsky and there he was very fortunate to work under the direct supervision of one of the most remarkable experts in the early embryonic development of mammals – Dr. Dyban. While at RGI, Dr. Dozortsev worked closely with a Belgian physician Dr. Petra De Sutter and  in 1993 he joined a Ph.D. program at the Department of OB-GYN, the University of Ghent in Belgium, under the supervision of a world-renowned reproductive medicine expert Dr. Marc Dhont and graduated Summa Cum Laude as a Doctor of Biomedicine defending his thesis on the discovery of the mechanism of ICSI. After graduation, he was recruited by Dr. Michael Diamond to become a faculty at the Department of OBGYN, Wayne State University in Detroit where he befriended Dr. Michael Allon who started his private IVF clinic in Houston and invited him to join as a director of reproductive laboratories. Dr. Dozortsev currently serves as Scientific Director of Advanced Fertility Center of Texas, Director of Omni-Med Laboratories and as a president of the American College of Embryology. He is also a founding partner of Vitronova LLC.

Dr. Dmitri Dozortsev is certified as High Complexity Laboratory Director by the American Board of Bioanalysis and as Reproductive Embryologist by the American College of Embryology.
